My Mother Got Dementia Early... The Danger of Stress and How to Fix It
(00:00)
Dr. Tabatha: Life is happening for us, we're active participants, and our tiny little choices all throughout the day create our life. Welcome back to the Fast of Faith podcast! I hope you had an amazing holiday season and are feeling super pumped for 2025. This year, I want you to make massive shifts in your health, relationships, and finances. If you focus on shifting your health, it will spill into those other areas. That’s how it works.
(00:45)
Dr. Tabatha: We have an amazing guest today. I'm very blessed to have met her. Her name is Kirsten, and she’s an Emmy award-winning certified health coach and growth strategist. She's all about pairing wellness with a faith-filled life. Today, we’re going to talk about stress in a completely new way.
(01:22)
Dr. Tabatha: Kirsten, I’m so excited to have you here today!
Kirsten: Thanks for having me! I'm thrilled to be back again, merging faith and fitness in a way that can really impact lives.
(02:35)
Dr. Tabatha: Was there one specific incident that led you in this direction, or was it something that grew inside of you over time?
Kirsten: Well, I've always kept faith at the top of my life, even in my 13 years as a host at QVC and my time in broadcast news. Faith always guided me. But, it was a turning point when my mother got dementia early, around age 59. I remember a doctor telling me that stress had likely played a role in her cognitive decline. I had two young kids at the time, and I thought, “This could be preventable.” I didn't want this happening to them.
(04:46)
Kirsten: Around that time, my family and I decided to go on a mission trip. In 2023, we moved to Mexico for three and a half months to work at a Christian medical clinic. Witnessing people in poverty really changed my perspective on how we serve others. It made me realize how much it matters to serve even just one person, not to try and reach thousands, but to deeply impact the one.
(06:57)
Dr. Tabatha: That’s so powerful. It’s humbling to be reminded that our work is for God's glory, not for our own. But, stepping into that mission can be so fulfilling. You’ve had your own journey of healing, and now you want to help others reduce stress and rest. Tell us about the importance of rest and surrender.
(09:09)
Kirsten: I believe rest is crucial. Sometimes we keep ourselves busy with the mindset that we have to prove our worth by doing more. But God is calling us to surrender our busyness and trust Him. It’s hard to do, but once you start prioritizing rest, it transforms your life.
(09:42)
Kirsten: We live in a society that praises pushing through, but we need to realize that stress doesn’t help us get ahead. It's about letting go and trusting God's timing, even when things don’t go as planned.
(12:03)
Kirsten: The busyness in life can be distracting. God isn’t going to compete with all the noise we’ve created. We need to take time to rest and listen to Him. Non-Sleep Deep Rest (NSDR) is one way to reset, along with organizing our lives to reduce stress.
(14:09)
Kirsten: Our culture teaches us to wear stress like a badge of honor. We need to reframe that. Rest isn't something we should have to earn. It's vital for our health.
(15:24)
Dr. Tabatha: It's so easy to claim faith while still carrying all that stress. But true surrender means trusting God with everything, even the little things.
(17:23)
Kirsten: Yes, many women have been taught that they can only turn to God in times of crisis. But God wants to be involved in every moment of our lives, not just when we're desperate.
(18:20)
Kirsten: Many people feel they need someone else to go to God for them, or they think their problems are too small. But God wants you to come to Him with everything, no matter how big or small the issue.
(21:59)
Kirsten: Even small things, like feeling lonely or anxious, are worth bringing to God. He’s there to walk with you through it all, and that connection is essential for peace.
(23:07)
Kirsten: When working with women, one of the first things I focus on is sleep. Sleep is essential for reducing stress and helping women feel better.
(24:14)
Kirsten: Sometimes, disrupted sleep is a hidden issue. Whether it’s snoring or hormonal changes, addressing these things can significantly improve our health.
(25:21)
Kirsten: I’ve learned that when my body wasn’t functioning properly—whether due to hormones or gut health issues—I needed to seek God's help for everything. It shifted my perspective and really helped my healing process.
(26:18)
Kirsten: Gratitude is also crucial. Writing down five things I’m thankful for every day has made a huge difference in my mindset. It helps you focus on the positive and set your intentions before bed.
(27:12)
Kirsten: Journaling and reflecting on what you’re thankful for is a simple but powerful way to train your brain for better sleep and overall well-being.
(28:04)
Kirsten: I also avoid blue light before bed and use red lights in my room. This helps signal to my body that it’s time to wind down. Small changes in your environment can make a big impact on your rest.
(30:02)
Kirsten: The sleep routine starts in the morning—getting sunlight early in the day helps regulate your circadian rhythm and improves sleep quality.
(31:01)
Kirsten: Even on cold winter mornings, I step outside to get sunlight. It’s a small effort that makes a huge difference in how I feel throughout the day.
(33:07)
Kirsten: We have to make the hard choices. Life isn’t going to be easy, but we can fight against the obstacles and make the most of every situation. Taking control of our health and rest is part of that fight.
(34:13)
Kirsten: Sometimes, we have to give up certain comforts—like sugar or alcohol—if we want to prioritize our health. Those are tough decisions, but they’re worth it.
(35:50)
Kirsten: We create our lives with the choices we make every day. It’s up to us to make the small decisions that lead to a healthier, more fulfilled life.
(36:19)
Kirsten: I encourage women to take action—whether that’s joining my program or just making small changes in their routine. You have the power to change your life for the better.
(37:55)
Dr. Tabatha: It’s so inspiring to hear your story, Kirsten. You’re making a real difference in the lives of so many people. Keep spreading that message of rest and peace.
(39:00)
Kirsten: Thank you so much, Dr. Tabatha. It’s been a blessing to be on this journey with you. Remember, taking care of yourself isn’t selfish. It’s a gift you give to the people you love, and to yourself.
